Making a Complaint
The "Livro de Reclamações"
In Portugal, every business must have a complaints book (livro de reclamações). It is your legal right to use it:
- Quero o livro de reclamações, por favor. (I want the complaints book, please.)
Expressing Dissatisfaction with the Subjunctive
Use the presente do conjuntivo after expressions of desire or demand:
- Exijo que me devolvam o dinheiro. (I demand that you return my money.)
- Quero que resolvam este problema. (I want you to solve this problem.)
Polite but Firm Language
Use the imperfeito or condicional for polite complaints:
- Queria falar com o responsável. (I wanted to speak to the manager.)
- Gostaria de fazer uma reclamação. (I would like to make a complaint.)
Describing the Problem
- O produto tem um defeito. (The product has a defect.)
- O serviço foi péssimo. (The service was terrible.)
- Não funciona como deveria. (It doesn't work as it should.)
Tip: The "livro de reclamações" is taken very seriously in Portugal. Complaints are reviewed by regulatory authorities.
