Korean has two major categories of idiomatic expression. 사자성어 are four-character idioms borrowed from Classical Chinese, used in formal writing and educated speech. Examples: 일석이조 (一石二鳥 — one stone two birds), 유비무환 (有備無患 — prepared, no worry).
속담 are native Korean proverbs that use vivid imagery from everyday life. They are more casual and conversational. For example: 원숭이도 나무에서 떨어진다 (even experts make mistakes) or 가는 말이 고와야 오는 말이 곱다 (be kind to receive kindness).
At C1 level, you should recognize both types in context and use them naturally. Misusing a 사자성어 in casual conversation sounds pedantic; using a 속담 in a formal essay may seem too colloquial. The key is register awareness.
