DIY and Repairs: Imperative Sequences with 먼저...그 다음에
When explaining how to do repairs or DIY tasks in Korean, you sequence steps using 먼저 (first) and 그 다음에 (then / next).
Step sequencing:
- 먼저 전원을 끄세요 — First, turn off the power
- 그 다음에 전구를 교체하세요 — Then, replace the bulb
- 마지막으로 다시 켜 보세요 — Finally, try turning it on again
Imperative forms:
- -으세요 / -세요 — polite command: 조여 주세요 (please tighten it)
- -아/어야 해요 — must do: 파이프를 막아야 해요 (you must seal the pipe)
Describing a malfunction:
- -이/가 고장났어요 — is broken: 보일러가 고장났어요
- -이/가 막혔어요 — is clogged: 하수구가 막혔어요
- -에서 물이 새요 — is leaking water from: 수도꼭지에서 물이 새요
Tip: For home emergencies, call the 관리인 (building manager) or a 수리 기사 (repair technician).

आम गलतियाँ
수도꼭지에 물이 새요수도꼭지에서 물이 새요When something leaks FROM a place, use 에서, not 에. 에 marks a static location/destination, but the leaking source needs 에서.
드라이버로 나사가 조여야 해요드라이버로 나사를 조여야 해요조이다 (to tighten) is transitive, so 나사 (screw) is the object and takes 를, not the subject marker 가.
보일러가 고장했어요보일러가 고장났어요To say something broke down, use 고장나다 (intransitive), not 고장하다. 고장이 나다 → 고장났어요.
먼저 전원을 끄세요, 그 다음에 전구를 교체합니다먼저 전원을 끄세요, 그 다음에 전구를 교체하세요Both steps are commands, so keep the imperative 교체하세요. 교체합니다 is a plain declarative and breaks the instruction tone.
파이프가 막혀서 수리 기사를 부릅시다파이프가 막혔으니까 수리 기사를 부릅시다Before a suggestion (부릅시다) or command, use the cause connective -(으)니까, not -아서. -아서 can't precede 부릅시다.
