Text Messages in Korean
Korean texting has its own informal language. Consonants alone are used as abbreviations, and words get shortened.
Common consonant abbreviations:
- ㅋㅋ → haha (from 크크, the sound of laughing)
- ㅎㅎ → hehe (lighter laugh)
- ㅠㅠ → crying (shape of tears falling)
- ㅇㅇ → yes / okay (from 응응)
- ㄴㄴ → no (from 노노)
- ㄱㄱ → let's go (from 고고)
KakaoTalk (카카오톡):
- This is the dominant messaging app in Korea
- 카톡 is the informal short form
- 카톡 해 → send me a KakaoTalk
Informal text expressions:
- 어디야? → Where are you? (very casual)
- 뭐해? → What are you doing? (casual)
- 지금 가고 있어 → I'm coming now
- 나중에 봐 → See you later
- 잠깐만 → Wait a sec

카카오톡 해카톡 해In everyday texts, Koreans use the shortened 카톡, not the full 카카오톡
ㅋㅋㅋA single ㅋ can sound sarcastic or unenthusiastic; use ㅋㅋ or more to show genuine laughter
답장 해 줘답장해 줘답장하다 is one word; do not add a space before 해: 답장해 줘
