Fake News and Media Literacy in Japanese

Critical thinking about information requires these grammar patterns:

〜かどうか (whether or not)

Express uncertainty about truth.

  • この情報(じょうほう)が正(ただ)しいかどうか確認(かくにん)しましょう。 (Let's verify whether this information is correct or not.)

〜はずです (should be / expected)

Express what you expect to be true based on logic.

  • 出典(しゅってん)がある記事(きじ)は信頼(しんらい)できるはずです。 (Articles with sources should be reliable.)

〜わけではない (it doesn't mean that)

Deny a logical conclusion that someone might assume.

  • ネットに書(か)いてあるからといって、本当(ほんとう)なわけではない。 (Just because it's written online doesn't mean it's true.)

These patterns help you discuss media critically and express nuanced views about information reliability.

आम गलतियाँ

  • この情報が正しいかどうかを確認しましょう。
    この情報が正しいかどうか確認しましょう。

    After かどうか, the particle を is usually omitted before verbs like 確認する.

  • 出典があるから、信頼できるはずだ。
    出典がある記事は信頼できるはずです。

    In polite speech, use はずです. Also, specify what should be reliable (記事).

  • ネットのわけではない。
    ネットに書いてあるからといって本当なわけではない。

    わけではない needs a full clause before it, not just a noun.

  • この記事は正しいはずではありません。
    この記事は正しくないはずです。

    Negate the adjective (正しくない), then add はずです. はずではありません is incorrect.

  • 情報は本当かどうかわからないです。
    情報が本当かどうかわかりません。

    Use が (not は) before かどうか, and わかりません is more natural than わからないです.
