This lesson teaches patterns for giving instructions, sequencing steps, and trying new things — perfect for DIY contexts.

〜方(かた) (how to do)

Attach to the verb stem to express the method or way of doing something.

  • 棚(たな)の取(と)り付(つ)け方(かた)を教(おし)えてください。 (Please teach me how to install a shelf.)
  • この工具(こうぐ)の使(つか)い方がわかりません。 (I don't know how to use this tool.)

まず / 次に / 最後に (sequential markers)

Used to order steps in instructions.

  • まず、壁(かべ)の位置(いち)を決(き)めます。次(つぎ)に、穴(あな)を開(あ)けます。最後(さいご)に、棚(たな)を取(と)り付(つ)けます。
  • (First, decide the wall position. Next, drill holes. Finally, install the shelf.)

〜てみる (to try doing)

Expresses trying something for the first time or experimentally.

  • 自分(じぶん)で修理(しゅうり)してみます。 (I'll try repairing it myself.)
  • この色(いろ)を壁(かべ)に塗(ぬ)ってみましょう。 (Let's try painting this color on the wall.)

  • 電球(でんきゅう)の交換(こうかん)の仕方(しかた)を教(おし)えてください。Please teach me how to change a light bulb.
  • まず、電源(でんげん)を切(き)ってから作業(さぎょう)しましょう。First, let us turn off the power before working.
  • 自分(じぶん)で組(く)み立(た)ててみます。I will try assembling it myself.
  • 水漏(みずも)れがあるので、修理(しゅうり)してもらいたいです。There is a leak; I want to have it repaired.
  • 次(つぎ)に、ネジで棚(たな)を固定(こてい)します。Next, fix the shelf with screws.
  • 壁(かべ)を塗(ぬ)ってみたら、きれいになりました。I tried painting the wall and it turned out nice.

आम गलतियाँ

  • 棚の取り付ける方を教えてください。
    棚(たな)の取(と)り付(つ)け方(かた)を教(おし)えてください。

    〜方 attaches to the verb STEM (masu-stem), not the dictionary form. 取り付ける → 取り付け + 方.

  • 最初、壁の位置を決めます。
    まず、壁(かべ)の位置(いち)を決(き)めます。

    For step-by-step instructions, use まず (first), not 最初 which means the very beginning of something rather than a first step.

  • 自分で修理をしてみます。
    自分(じぶん)で修理(しゅうり)してみます。

    With する-verbs, drop the を before してみる. 修理してみる flows naturally; 修理をしてみる sounds unnatural.

  • 壁を塗るてみましょう。
    壁(かべ)に塗(ぬ)ってみましょう。

    てみる attaches to the て-form: 塗って (not 塗るて). Also use に for the surface being painted.

  • 次、ネジで固定します。
    次(つぎ)に、ネジで固定(こてい)します。

    Use 次に (with particle に) for sequential instructions, not 次 alone.
