Stare + gerund vs simple present

In Italian, you distinguish between an ongoing action and a habit using two different forms.

Stare + gerund → action happening right now (like English "be + -ing")

• io : sto → Sto lavorando. (I'm working.)
• tu : stai → Stai mangiando? (Are you eating?)
• lui/lei : sta → Sta parlando al telefono. (He/She is talking on the phone.)
• noi : stiamo → Stiamo preparando la riunione. (We're preparing the meeting.)
• voi : state → State ascoltando? (Are you listening?)
• loro : stanno → Stanno cercando un nuovo ufficio. (They're looking for a new office.)

Forming the gerund

• -are → -ando : lavorare → lavorando, parlare → parlando
• -ere → -endo : leggere → leggendo, scrivere → scrivendo
• -ire → -endo : dormire → dormendo, finire → finendo

Important exceptions

• fare → facendo
• bere → bevendo
• dire → dicendo

Simple present vs stare + gerund

• Simple present (habit) : Lavoro in ufficio. (I work in an office — habit.) → Stare + gerund (right now) : Sto lavorando in ufficio. (I'm working in the office — right now.)
• Simple present (habit) : Leggo il giornale. (I read the newspaper — habit.) → Stare + gerund (right now) : Sto leggendo il giornale. (I'm reading the newspaper — right now.)

💬 Example: "Non posso venire, sto finendo un progetto importante." (I can't come, I'm finishing an important project.)

💬 Example: "Cosa stai facendo? Sto scrivendo un'email al capo." (What are you doing? I'm writing an email to the boss.)
