Great Hindi Authors: Style, Voice and Legacy
मुंशी प्रेमचंद (1880–1936) — the Upanyas Samrat (उपन्यास सम्राट — Emperor of the Novel). His works like गोदान, गबन, and निर्मला depict rural poverty, caste oppression, and women's subjugation with unflinching realism (यथार्थवाद). His prose style is simple yet devastating — short sentences, earthy dialogue, moral clarity.
महादेवी वर्मा (1907–1987) — master of the छायावाद movement. Her poetry (यामा, नीहार, रश्मि) blends mysticism, nature imagery, and feminist sensibility. Her prose मेरा परिवार and अतीत के चलचित्र reveal equally fine observational powers. She wrote about animals, children and the marginalised with deep empathy.
हरिवंश राय बच्चन (1907–2003) — immortal for मधुशाला (1935), a sequence of 135 quatrains using the tavern and wine as metaphors for life's philosophy. His later autobiography (क्या भूलूँ क्या याद करूँ) is a landmark of Hindi memoir writing.
