Writing Hindi Poetry: Forms, Metre and Tradition
Hindi poetry encompasses three great traditions: Sanskrit-derived classical forms, Urdu-Persian forms, and indigenous folk forms.
दोहा (Doha): The most iconic Hindi folk-verse form. A couplet of two lines, each divided into two parts of 13 and 11 syllables (matras). Kabir and Tulsidas made the doha immortal:
कबीर दास: "बुरा जो देखन मैं चला, बुरा न मिलिया कोय। जो दिल खोजा आपना, मुझसे बुरा न कोय।" (I went looking for the bad, I found no one bad. When I searched my own heart, none was worse than me.)
ग़ज़ल (Ghazal): Originating in Persian, adopted into Urdu, and thriving in Hindi. Each शेर (sher/couplet) is self-contained. The मतला (matla) — opening couplet — sets the rhyme (radif and kafia). The मक़्ता (maqta) — closing couplet — traditionally contains the poet's name.
छायावादी कविता: The Romantic-mystical movement (1918–1936). Hallmarks: nature as subjective emotion, mystical longing (विरह), rich sound devices, complex imagery. Major poets: Jaishankar Prasad, Suryakant Tripathi "Nirala", Sumitranandan Pant, Mahadevi Varma.
मुक्त छंद (Free verse): Pioneered by Nirala in Hindi — breaking from classical metre while maintaining internal rhythm and emotional intensity.
