Literary Analysis in Hindi: काव्यशास्त्र and Beyond
Hindi literary tradition draws from two deep wells: the Sanskrit काव्यशास्त्र (poetics) codified by Bharata (नाट्यशास्त्र) and Anandavardhana (ध्वन्यालोक), and the modern critical tradition shaped by writers like Ramchandra Shukla and Hazari Prasad Dwivedi.
Core रस theory: Every literary work aims to evoke one of nine emotional aesthetics (नवरस):
- श्रृंगार (love), हास्य (comedy), करुण (pathos), रौद्र (fury)
- वीर (heroism), भयानक (terror), बीभत्स (disgust), अद्भुत (wonder)
- शान्त (tranquility) — the ninth rasa, added later
Alankar (अलंकार) — Figures of Speech: Divided into शब्दालंकार (sound-based) and अर्थालंकार (meaning-based):
- उपमा: direct simile — "मुख चन्द्रमा की भाँति है" (her face is like the moon)
- रूपक: metaphor — "मुख चन्द्रमा है" (her face is the moon)
- उत्प्रेक्षा: fancy/presumption — "मुख मानो चन्द्रमा हो" (as if her face were the moon)
व्यंजना (Dhvani/Suggestion): The most sophisticated level of meaning in a text — what is hinted at beyond the literal. Anandavardhana considered this the soul of poetry.
Modern Hindi criticism: Look for प्रगतिवाद (progressivism), छायावाद (romanticism/mysticism), प्रयोगवाद (experimentalism) — the major 20th-century movements.
