Telling a news story in French requires mastering the interplay between imparfait and passé composé in narration.

Imparfait sets the scene (background, descriptions, ongoing actions):

  • Il faisait nuit. (It was nighttime.)
  • La rue était calme. (The street was quiet.)
  • Le témoin marchait sur le trottoir. (The witness was walking on the sidewalk.)

Passé composé tells what happened (sudden events, actions):

  • Soudain, une voiture a freiné. (Suddenly, a car braked.)
  • La police est arrivée rapidement. (The police arrived quickly.)

Combined narration pattern: Il pleuvait quand l'accident a eu lieu.

Useful narrative markers:

  • Soudain / Tout à coup — Suddenly
  • À ce moment-là — At that moment
  • Pendant que — While (+ imparfait)
  • Quand / Lorsque — When (+ passé composé for the interrupting action)

  • Il faisait beau quand c'est arrivé.Setting the scene for a story
  • Soudain, un bruit a retenti.Introducing a sudden event
  • Les pompiers sont intervenus.Describing emergency response
  • Selon les témoins, il roulait vite.Quoting witnesses
  • La police a ouvert une enquête.Reporting police action
  • Personne n'a été blessé.Reporting on injuries

Use imparfait for the background action (it was raining), not passé composé.

Both actions are completed events in sequence — use passé composé.

'Pendant que' introduces the background; the main event should be in passé composé.

  • Soudain, la rue était vide.
    Soudain, la rue s'est vidée.

'Soudain' signals a sudden change — use passé composé, not imparfait.

Don't use 'et' to connect passé composé and imparfait in the same clause.
