El estilo indirecto en inglés
El estilo indirecto permite transmitir lo que alguien dijo, pensó o preguntó, sin citar directamente sus palabras.
Regla principal: retroceso de tiempos
Al reportar lo que se dijo, los tiempos retroceden un paso:
- *presente → pasado simple*: "I want a refund" → She said she wanted a refund.
- *pasado simple → pasado perfecto*: "I bought it yesterday" → He said he had bought it the day before.
- *will → would*: "I'll check" → She said she would check.
Cambios adicionales:
- *today → that day*
- *yesterday → the day before*
- *here → there*
Verbos introductores frecuentes: *said, told, explained, complained, asked, promised, warned*
Ejemplos en una tienda:
- The customer said the product was faulty.
- She complained that she hadn't received a receipt.
- He asked if he could exchange the item.

Errores frecuentes
She said she wants a refundShe said she wanted a refundEn estilo indirecto, el presente (wants) retrocede al pasado simple (wanted).
He told that the product was brokenHe said / He told me that the product was broken"Tell" requiere un objeto indirecto (me, him, her). "Say" se usa sin objeto: he said that...
She asked what time is the shop openShe asked what time the shop was openEn una pregunta indirecta, se usa el orden normal sujeto-verbo (sin inversión) y el tiempo retrocede.
I complained about the product is faultyI complained that the product was faultyDespués de "complain", se usa "that + oración", no "about + oración completa".
I don't have enough money for payI don't have enough money to pay'Enough' + sustantivo + 'to' + infinitivo.
