Spanish Idiomatic Expressions
Idioms are expressions whose meaning cannot be deduced from individual words. They enrich your Spanish and make it sound more natural.
- Body-part expressions:
No tener pelos en la lengua (to not mince words — to speak frankly)
Costar un ojo de la cara (to cost an arm and a leg — to be very expensive)
- Animal expressions:
Ser un buitre (to be a vulture — to be opportunistic)
Llevarse como el perro y el gato (to fight like cats and dogs)
- Popular proverbs:
Más vale tarde que nunca (better late than never)
No hay mal que por bien no venga (every cloud has a silver lining)
- Tip: Do not try to translate literally. Learn each expression as a fixed unit with its usage context.
