Past passive voice in Spanish
To describe the justice system, the past passive voice is essential.
- Fue + past participle (simple past passive):
El acusado fue condenado a diez años. — The defendant was sentenced to ten years.
- Había sido + past participle (pluperfect passive):
El sospechoso había sido absuelto anteriormente. — The suspect had been acquitted previously.
- Fue declarado + adjective:
Fue declarado culpable por el jurado. — He was declared guilty by the jury.
- Fueron presentadas (plural):
Las pruebas fueron presentadas ante el tribunal. — The evidence was presented before the court.
The past participle always agrees with the subject in gender and number in passive voice.
