At the C2 level, the difference between a competent speaker and a true master lies in lexical precision — choosing the single word that carries exactly the right meaning, register, and connotation.
точный vs. верный vs. правильный
These three words all translate as "correct," but they are not interchangeable:
- точный — precise in measurement or correspondence to fact: точное время (exact time), точные науки (exact sciences)
- верный — true/faithful, implying loyalty or moral correctness: верный друг (faithful friend), верный ответ (correct answer — but with a sense of "the right one")
- правильный — conforming to rules, norms, standards: правильное произношение (correct pronunciation), правильный образ жизни (healthy/proper lifestyle)
уместный vs. подходящий
- подходящий — objectively suitable, matching requirements: подходящая работа (a suitable job)
- уместный — contextually appropriate, stylistically fitting: уместная шутка (an apt joke), неуместное замечание (an out-of-place remark)
The Concept of Коннотация
Russian is rich in synonyms that carry different emotional weights:
- умереть / скончаться / преставиться / загнуться — to die (neutral / formal/medical / archaic-religious / vulgar)
- худой / тощий / стройный — thin (neutral / scrawny/pejorative / slender/positive)
Mastery means choosing based on оттенок значения (shade of meaning) and register, not just dictionary equivalence.
Ёмкость (Expressive Density)
The ideal Russian word is ёмкий — dense with meaning. A single well-chosen word can replace an entire clause: тоска (untranslatable longing-anguish), авось (the Russian spirit of luck-based optimism).
Однозначность vs. Многозначность
In formal and technical writing, стремись к однозначности (unambiguity). In literary prose, многозначность creates depth. Knowing when each serves your purpose is the mark of C2 mastery.

- Это слово здесь неуместно.This word is out of place here.
- «Худой» и «тощий» — не синонимы.худой and тощий are not mere synonyms.

- Оттенок значения принципиален.The shade of meaning here is crucial.
- Тоска — непереводимая глубина.A word with untranslatable depth.
- Однозначность исключает двусмысленностьAn unambiguous answer excludes ambiguity.
- Выбор слова определяет тон.Word choice determines tone.
常见错误
Я скажу правильное слово.Я скажу точное слово. / Я подберу верное слово.правильный means rule-conforming; for precise word choice, use точный (exact) or верный (the right one)
Это слово подходящее для этой речи.Это слово уместно в этой речи.подходящий = objectively suitable (requirements met); уместный = contextually/stylistically appropriate
Худой и тощий — это одно и то же.Худой и тощий — синонимы, но с разными коннотациями.худой is neutral; тощий has a pejorative connotation of being unattractively thin
Его ответ был очень однозначный.Его ответ был совершенно однозначным.очень is inappropriate with однозначный (something is either unambiguous or not); use совершенно or simply drop the intensifier
Выбирай приблизительно правильные слова.Выбирай точные слова.At C2 level, «приблизительно правильный» is a contradiction — precision is either achieved or not
Слово «умереть» и «загнуться» имеют тот же смысл.Слово «умереть» нейтральное, а «загнуться» — грубое и просторечное.They share denotation but differ completely in register and connotation
