Animal Idioms

  • Ir com o rabo entre as pernas (lit. to go with the tail between the legs) — to leave in shame

Situational Idioms

  • Ficar a ver navios (lit. to stay watching ships) — derives from waiting at the port for ships that never arrive
  • Bater na mesma tecla (lit. to hit the same key) — to keep insisting on the same point
  • Deitar água na fervura (lit. to throw water on the boiling) — to calm a tense situation

Using Idioms at C1

Idioms make your Portuguese sound natural and culturally aware. Use them sparingly in formal contexts but freely in conversation.

Tip: These expressions are distinctly European Portuguese. Brazilian Portuguese has many different idioms for the same meanings.
