Emphasis and Focus in Portuguese

Cleft Sentences (Frases Clivadas)

Cleft sentences restructure a sentence to emphasize one element using é que:

O João comprou o livro → Foi o João que comprou o livro (It was João who bought the book)
Ela partiu ontem → Foi ontem que ela partiu (It was yesterday that she left)

The «é que» Construction

The most common emphasis marker in spoken European Portuguese. It can highlight any sentence element:

Eu é que sei (I'm the one who knows)
Ali é que está o problema (That's where the problem lies)

Inversion for Emphasis

Moving elements to the front of a sentence creates emphasis through topicalization:

Grande surpresa tivemos nós! (What a surprise we had!)
Bonito serviço me fizeste! (A fine job you did! — ironic)

Reduplication and Intensifiers

Portuguese uses reduplication for emphasis: muito muito bom (very very good). Intensifiers like mesmo, próprio, and lá add force: Eu mesmo vi (I myself saw it), Ele lá sabe (He knows nothing about it — ironic).

Tip: Overusing emphasis markers sounds unnatural. Use them strategically for impact.

In European PT, cleft sentences use «que», not «quem» with nouns
~~É eu que sei~~
Sou eu que sei / Eu é que sei
The verb «ser» must agree with the pronoun (sou eu, not é eu)
~~O que quero é que descansar~~
O que quero é descansar
No «que» after «é» in pseudo-cleft — use bare infinitive
~~Mesmo eu vi isso~~
Eu mesmo vi isso
In PT, «mesmo» follows the pronoun for emphasis, not precedes it
~~Ele que é o culpado~~
É ele que é o culpado
Cleft sentences require the initial «é/foi» to be present
