Space Exploration
Portuguese uses specific vocabulary and structures to discuss space and scientific exploration:
Nominalization for scientific concepts:
- A descoberta de água em Marte revolucionou a exploração espacial. (The discovery of water on Mars revolutionized space exploration.)
Future subjunctive for space milestones:
- Quando o ser humano pisar Marte, será um marco histórico. (When humans set foot on Mars, it will be a historic milestone.)
Compound tenses for ongoing research:
- Os cientistas têm investigado a possibilidade de vida extraterrestre. (Scientists have been investigating the possibility of extraterrestrial life.)
Note: European Portuguese uses foguetão (rocket) while Brazilian Portuguese uses foguete. Similarly, EP uses nave espacial more formally than the colloquial alternatives.

A sonda tem enviado dados há 2020.A sonda tem enviado dados desde 2020.Use 'desde' with a specific year. 'Há' is for durations ('há cinco anos').
