Analyzing Media Discourse in Polish
Critical media analysis requires understanding how language shapes reality.
Key analytical concepts:
- Narracja (narrative): the story a medium tells about events — what is included and excluded
- Framing: how an issue is presented — choosing which aspects to highlight
- kryzys migracyjny vs. napływ uchodźców — same event, different frames
- Stronniczość (bias): systematic slanting toward a viewpoint, often subtle
Linguistic markers to watch:
- Loaded adjectives: zbrodniczy reżim, brutalni demonstranci
- Passive voice to hide agency: zostało podjęte (was taken) — by whom?
- Nominalization: eskalacja napięć instead of napięcia rosną
- Quotation marks for irony: "reformy" implies scare-quoting the term
Analysing Polish media: look for przemilczenia (things left unsaid) and słowa-klucze (keywords) that activate emotional schemas.
