Reporting and Paraphrasing in Polish
Polish has rich resources for accurately conveying what others said.
Reported speech (mowa zależna) in Polish:
Direct: "Jestem niewinny" — I am innocent Reported: Stwierdził, że jest niewinny — He stated that he is innocent
Note: Polish reported speech does NOT shift tenses like English — present stays present.
Verbs of reporting by tone:
- Neutral: powiedzieć, stwierdzić, oznajmić
- Cautious: twierdzić, utrzymywać (to claim, to maintain)
- Distancing: rzekomo twierdzić, jak podaje... (allegedly claim, as reported by...)
- Quoting exactly: cytować dosłownie, przytoczyć słowa
Paraphrasing techniques:
- Innymi słowy,... (in other words)
- Według rozmówcy,... (according to the interlocutor)
- Jak wynika z wypowiedzi,... (as follows from the statement)
Always distinguish between cytat (direct quote) and parafraza (paraphrase) to maintain journalistic integrity.

- Cytując dosłownie słowa prezesa...Quoting the chairman's words verbatim...
- Rozmówca utrzymuje, że...The interlocutor maintains that...

Prezydent powiedział: Jestem zmęczony.Prezydent stwierdził, że jest zmęczony.In Polish reported speech, the conjunction że introduces the clause and the verb stays in present tense — no tense backshifting
Według ministra, że sytuacja jest stabilna.Według ministra sytuacja jest stabilna.Według + genitive is followed directly by the paraphrased content without że (that) — że is only used after verbs like powiedzieć, że...
On utrzymywał, że jest niewinny i że nie wiedział.Utrzymywał, że jest niewinny i że nic nie wiedział.Polish prefers nic nie (nothing) in negated sentences; nie + verb already negates, so niewinny and nie wiedział are both fine, but nie nic is incorrect
