Native Traps: Errors Even Koreans Make
Even proficient Korean speakers make predictable mistakes. Knowing these traps will set you apart.
Spacing (띄어쓰기)
- Korean has strict spacing rules that native speakers routinely violate
- Bound nouns like 것, 수, 만큼 must be separated from preceding modifiers
- Wrong: 할수있다 → Correct: 할 수 있다
되 vs 돼
- 되 is the stem; 돼 = 되 + 어 (contracted)
- Test: replace with 하/해 — if 해 sounds right, use 돼
- Wrong: 안되요 → Correct: 안 돼요
웬 vs 왠
- 왠 only appears in 왠지 (for some reason)
- All other uses require 웬: 웬일이야, 웬만하면
- Wrong: 왠일이야 → Correct: 웬일이야
-데 vs -대
- -데 reports the speaker's own past observation or experience
- -대 quotes what someone else said (indirect speech)
- Wrong: 거기 좋대 (if you went there) → Correct: 거기 좋데
Overcorrection (과잉 교정)
- Trying too hard to be formal often produces unnatural results
- Using 께서 with inanimate subjects or excessive honorifics for peers
Particle drops in writing
- Dropping subject/object particles is natural in speech, but errors in formal writing
表达
- 되다 vs 돼다Test: substitute 하다/해다 — 해 = use 돼
- 웬만하면 참아Mostly/if at all possible, bear with it
- 왠지 모르게 기분이 좋아For some reason I feel good (set phrase)
- 할 수 있다Can do — spacing after 수 is mandatory
- 거기 좋데요It was good there (speaker own experience)
- 선생님이 오신대요They say the teacher is coming (quoting others)
常见错误
안되요안 돼요돼 = 되+어 contraction. 되 alone is the stem only
