보다 vs 바라보다 vs 응시하다
- 보다: neutral, everyday "look/see"
- 바라보다: gaze at, look toward with longing or intention
- 응시하다: stare intently, formal register
화나다 vs 분노하다 vs 격분하다
- 화나다: everyday anger (I'm annoyed/upset)
- 분노하다: formal anger, righteous indignation
- 격분하다: intense rage, used for extreme situations
어감 (word feel) matters
- 단순히 vs 그냥: both mean "simply/just" but 단순히 is written/formal, 그냥 is spoken
- 즉시 vs 곧 vs 바로: all mean "immediately/soon" but with different degrees of urgency
Register matching
- Using 격식체 words in casual conversation sounds stiff or comical
- Using 비격식체 words in formal writing shows lack of sophistication
Avoiding repetition elegantly
- Korean writers use pronoun-free sentence restructuring
- Vary between abstract nominalizations and direct verb forms for sophistication
