Talking About the Future: -(으)ㄹ 것이다
In Korean, the construction -(으)ㄹ 것이다 expresses future events, predictions, or intentions. It is one of the most common ways to talk about what will happen or what you think will occur.
How to form it
- Verb stem ending in a vowel → add -ㄹ 것이다
- 하다 → 할 것이다 (will do)
- 되다 → 될 것이다 (will become)
- Verb stem ending in a consonant → add -을 것이다
- 먹다 → 먹을 것이다 (will eat)
- 읽다 → 읽을 것이다 (will read)
Spoken vs written
In speech, 것이다 often contracts to 거다 or 거예요:
- 인공지능이 세상을 바꿀 거예요. (AI will change the world.)
Prediction vs intention
This form can express both a prediction (something you think will happen) and a stated intention (something you plan to do). Context makes the meaning clear.
- 이 알고리즘이 더 정확해질 것이다. (This algorithm will become more accurate — prediction)
- 저는 AI를 공부할 것이다. (I will study AI — intention)
Practice using -(으)ㄹ 것이다 whenever you talk about future developments in technology!
常见错误
로봇이 일 자동화할 것이다로봇이 일을 자동화할 것이다'일' is the object, so it needs the object particle 을. Don't drop it.
알고리즘은 더 정확해질 거예요알고리즘이 더 정확해질 거예요New info / a prediction about the subject takes 이/가, not the topic marker 은/는.
인공지능이 세상을 바꿀 거에요인공지능이 세상을 바꿀 거예요The spoken future ending is spelled 거예요, never 거에요.
데이터를 알고리즘에 분석할 것이다데이터를 알고리즘으로 분석할 것이다To say 'by means of' an algorithm, use the instrument particle (으)로, not 에.
교수님, 인공지능이 발전할 거야교수님, 인공지능이 발전할 거예요Talking to a professor needs polite 해요체 (거예요), not casual 거야.
