Japanese Collocations: Fixed Verb-Noun Pairs
In advanced Japanese, certain verbs pair naturally with specific nouns. Using the wrong verb sounds unnatural even if grammatically correct. These collocations are a hallmark of C1 proficiency.
Key Patterns
Formal collocations often use する-verb alternatives:
- 対策を講じる (not 対策をする) — "to implement measures"
- 影響を及ぼす (not 影響をする) — "to exert influence"
- 注目を集める (not 注目をもらう) — "to attract attention"
Register Awareness
Collocations shift with register. In casual speech: 結論を出す. In academic writing: 結論に達する or 結論を導き出す. Choosing the right collocation signals your command of the register.
Common Traps
Learners often substitute generic verbs (する、ある) where a specific collocation verb is expected. At C1, precision in verb-noun pairing distinguishes fluent from merely correct Japanese.

常见错误

結論をする結論を出すConclusions are put forth (出す), not done (する).
