Mastering Keigo: Beyond the Basics
At C1 level, keigo is not just about knowing the forms — it is about using the right level at the right time. The biggest pitfall for advanced learners is 二重敬語 (double keigo), where two honorific forms are stacked unnecessarily.
Avoiding Double Keigo
- Wrong: お読みになられる → Correct: お読みになる (respectful "to read")
- Wrong: おっしゃられる → Correct: おっしゃる (respectful "to say")
The rule is simple: apply only one layer of keigo per verb.
謙譲語II (Humble Language II)
Beyond standard humble forms, 謙譲語II (丁重語) is used to show politeness without a specific recipient:
- 参る (まいる) — "I will go" (humble, used in formal announcements)
- 申す (もうす) — "I say" (humble, used in self-introductions: 山田と申します)
- 存じる (ぞんじる) — "I know" (humble: 存じております)
These forms are essential in business Japanese, formal speeches, and customer service.

常见错误
お読みになられるお読みになるDouble keigo: stacking お～になる with ～られる is redundant.
先生が申しました先生がおっしゃいました申す is humble (for yourself), not respectful (for others).
私はご存知です私は存じておりますご存知 is respectful (for others); use 存じる for yourself.
社長、私が参ります社長、ただいま参りますCorrect humble form, but add time context for natural usage.
お客様が伺いますお客様がいらっしゃいます伺う is humble (for yourself); use いらっしゃる for the customer.
