Expressing Obligation: Must Do
To say "must" in Japanese, use Verb ない form + ければなりません. First, make the negative form, drop the final い, then add ければなりません. Example: 行く → 行かない → 行かなければなりません (I must go).
A shorter, more casual form is なくちゃ or なきゃ: 行かなくちゃ (I gotta go). At the airport, you'll often need this pattern: パスポートを見せなければなりません (You must show your passport), チェックインしなければなりません (You must check in).
To ask if something is necessary: 搭乗券を見せなければなりませんか (Must I show my boarding pass?). To say something is not necessary, use なくてもいいです: 税関で何も言わなくてもいいです (You don't have to say anything at customs).
