Italian Collocations
A collocation is a combination of words that naturally go together. In Italian, the choice of verb in a collocation often differs from English, which frequently trips up learners.
Fare vs Prendere
The most important distinction involves fare and prendere. Where English uses "make" or "take," Italian often makes the opposite choice:
- Fare una decisione ❌ → Prendere una decisione ✅ (to make a decision)
- Prendere colazione ❌ → Fare colazione ✅ (to have breakfast)
Dare + noun
The verb dare forms very common collocations:
- Dare un'occhiata (to take a look)
- Dare fastidio (to bother / annoy)
- Dare retta (to listen to / heed)
Mettere and Tenere
These two verbs also form fixed expressions:
- Mettere in dubbio (to call into question)
- Tenere conto di (to take into account)
- Tenere presente (to keep in mind)
Why Collocations Matter
An advanced speaker does not translate word by word: they know the natural combinations. Saying fare una decisione instead of prendere una decisione is grammatically understandable but sounds wrong to a native speaker.

常见错误
Fare una decisione importante.Prendere una decisione importante.In Italian, you take a decision (prendere), you don't make it (fare). This is a calque from English.
Prendere colazione al bar.Fare colazione al bar.Having breakfast is fare colazione in Italian, not prendere colazione. The verb choice is the opposite of English.
Fare attenzione al gradino.Stare attento al gradino.While fare attenzione exists, stare attento is the more natural collocation in everyday spoken Italian.
Dare una decisione entro domani.Prendere una decisione entro domani.You don't give a decision in Italian: you take it (prendere). Dare does not collocate with decisione.
Portare conto dei risultati.Tenere conto dei risultati.The correct verb is tenere (to hold/keep), not portare. Tenere conto di is a fixed collocation.
