Immigration: Advanced Indirect Speech
Indirect speech (discorso indiretto) in Italian B2 involves transpositions of verb tenses and persons according to the sequence of tenses.
Transposition rules
When the introductory verb is in the past, tenses change:
- presente → imperfetto : Ha detto che era stanco.
- passato prossimo → trapassato : Ha detto che aveva studiato.
- futuro → condizionale : Ha detto che sarebbe partito.
- imperativo → congiuntivo : Ha chiesto che partissimo.
Examples on immigration
Direct: "I rifugiati hanno diritto all''asilo."
Indirect: Il ministro ha affermato che i rifugiati avevano diritto all''asilo.
Direct: "Dobbiamo integrare i migranti."
Indirect: Il sindaco ha sostenuto che dovevano integrare i migranti.
Direct: "Le politiche cambieranno."
Indirect: Il funzionario ha promesso che le politiche sarebbero cambiate.
Useful introductory verbs
- affermare (to state), sostenere (to maintain), dichiarare (to declare), ammettere (to admit), negare (to deny), promettere (to promise)
Watch out
Pronouns and time/place adverbs also change: qui → lì, oggi → quel giorno, domani → il giorno dopo.

Ha promesso che riforma il sistema.Ha promesso che avrebbe riformato il sistema.In indirect speech with a past introductory verb, the future becomes the past conditional.
Ha detto che i rifugiati hanno diritto.Ha detto che i rifugiati avevano diritto.The present in direct speech shifts to imperfect in past indirect speech.
Ha ammesso qui che il problema esiste.Ha ammesso che il problema esisteva.'Qui' (here) becomes 'lì' in indirect speech. Also, for a past-reported fact, the present shifts to imperfect.
Loro hanno emigrato in Italia.Loro sono emigrati in Italia.Emigrare takes the auxiliary essere, not avere.
I migranti cercano di una vita migliore.I migranti cercano una vita migliore.Cercare is directly transitive: no preposition di before the object.
