Mixed Conditionals
In Italian B2, mixed conditionals are used to express a past hypothesis whose consequence affects the present. The condition is in the past, but the result is observable now.
Basic Structure
SE + congiuntivo trapassato → condizionale presente
Se fossero atterrati sulla Luna nel 2024, sapremmo già se ci sia acqua in superficie. — If they had landed on the Moon in 2024, we would already know whether there is water on the surface.
- Hypothèse : Se + congiuntivo trapassato → Conséquence : condizionale presente
- Exemple : Se la missione fosse partita in tempo… → …ora avremmo i dati.

1. Se il telescopio spaziale fosse stato lanciato prima, ora conosceremmo meglio l'universo. — If the space telescope had been launched earlier, we would know the universe better by now. 2. Se gli astronauti fossero rimasti più a lungo, potremmo avere più informazioni sulla gravità marziana. — If the astronauts had stayed longer, we might have more information on Martian gravity. 3. Se il rover non avesse perso il segnale, sapremmo già dove si trova l'acqua. — If the rover had not lost the signal, we would already know where the water is.
Comparison with the pure past conditional
- Pure conditional (past → past): Se fossero partiti prima, sarebbero arrivati in orbita ieri.
- Mixed conditional (past → present): Se fossero partiti prima, ora sarebbero già in orbita.
B2 tip: Mixed conditionals are common in scientific and hypothetical discussions. Watch for the word ora (now) in the consequence clause — it often signals a mixed conditional.

Se fossero atterrati, avrebbero saputo.Se fossero atterrati, sapremmo ora.In a mixed conditional (past → present), the consequence must be in the present conditional, not the past conditional.
Se sarebbero atterrati sulla Luna...Se fossero atterrati sulla Luna...In the 'se' clause, the conditional is never used: the subjunctive ('fossero') is required.
Se il rover non perde il segnale...Se il rover non avesse perso il segnale...For an unreal hypothesis about the past, use the past perfect subjunctive, not the present indicative.
Ora sapremo dove si trova l'acqua.Ora sapremmo dove si trova l'acqua.The consequence of a mixed conditional uses the present conditional ('sapremmo'), not the future ('sapremo').
Lo spazio è molto grande e vuoto.Lo spazio è immenso e privo di materia.At B2, prefer precise vocabulary: immenso, privo di materia.
Gli astronauti hanno andato sulla Luna.Gli astronauti sono andati sulla Luna.Andare takes the auxiliary essere, not avere: sono andati.
