Tone and Voice in Hindi
Hindi has a remarkably rich system for modulating tone and voice. The same sentence can convey respect, intimacy, sarcasm, or authority depending on pronoun choice, verb forms, and particles.
The three-tier pronoun system:
- तू (tū) — intimate/disrespectful: तू कहाँ जा रहा है? (tū kahāṅ jā rahā hai? — Where are you going?) — used with very close friends or to show contempt
- तुम (tum) — casual/friendly: तुम कहाँ जा रहे हो? (tum kahāṅ jā rahe ho?)
- आप (āp) — formal/respectful: आप कहाँ जा रहे हैं? (āp kahāṅ jā rahe haiṅ?)
Sarcasm and irony markers:
- वाह! (vāh!) can be genuine praise or biting sarcasm depending on context: वाह, क्या बात है! (vāh, kyā bāt hai! — Wow, what a thing!) — ironic when said after a blunder
- भला (bhalā) intensifies rhetorical disbelief: भला ऐसा भी होता है? (bhalā aisā bhī hotā hai? — Does that even happen?)
Softening with particles:
- ना (nā) at the end softens requests: चलो ना (chalo nā — Come on, let's go)
- ज़रा (zarā) adds gentleness: ज़रा सुनिए (zarā suniye — Please listen for a moment)
- तो (to) can add emphasis or mild impatience: बोलो तो! (bolo to! — Speak up, then!)
Shifting from कृपया बैठिए (kṛpayā baiṭhiye — Please sit) to बैठ जाओ (baiṭh jāo — Sit down) dramatically changes the power dynamic.

- वाह, क्या बात है!Wow! — can be genuine or ironic
- कृपया अपना लहजा बदलिएPlease change your tone
- मैं विनम्रता से कहना चाहूँगाI would like to say politely
- बात का लहजा बदल गयाThe tone of the conversation changed
常见错误
तू यह काम कर दे, बॉसआप यह काम कर दीजिएUsing तू with a boss is extremely disrespectful; always use आप with superiors and formal imperative दीजिए
सुनो, मुझे बात करनी हैसुनिए, मुझे बात करनी हैसुनो (listen, informal) is too casual for a polite request; use सुनिए (formal/respectful)
हाँ हाँ, बहुत अच्छा किया तुमनेहाँ, वाकई बहुत अच्छा काम किया आपनेRepeating हाँ and using तुमने sounds dismissive or sarcastic; use वाकई for genuine praise
