Conditional inversions (Konditionalinversionen) are an elegant C1 construction that replaces wenn with a verb-subject inversion. They are frequent in ethical discussions.
Structure: Conjugated verb in first position + subject, instead of wenn + subject + ... + verb at end.
- Wenn man dies bedenkt... becomes Bedenkt man dies...
- Wenn es vertretbar wäre... becomes Wäre es vertretbar...
With Konjunktiv II: Hätte man die Konsequenzen bedacht, wäre das Dilemma vermeidbar gewesen. (Had one considered the consequences, the dilemma could have been avoided.)
In ethical debate: This structure formulates hypotheses with authority: Stünde die Willensfreiheit infrage, entfiele jede Rechenschaftspflicht. (Were free will to be questioned, all accountability would vanish.)
Mastering this inversion is a stylistic hallmark of C1 proficiency.

常见错误
Wenn bedenkt man die Konsequenzen...Bedenkt man die Konsequenzen...In conditional inversion, wenn is dropped and the verb takes first position.
Wäre es vertretbar, man könnte zustimmen.Wäre es vertretbar, könnte man zustimmen.In the main clause after inversion, the verb stays in second position.
Stünde die Ethik im Vordergrund, es wäre besser.Stünde die Ethik im Vordergrund, wäre es besser.The main clause verb must be in second position after the comma.
Hätte man abwägen, wäre es anders.Hätte man abgewogen, wäre es anders gekommen.After hätte, use the past participle (abgewogen), not the infinitive.
Gäbe keine Willensfreiheit, wäre niemand verantwortlich.Gäbe es keine Willensfreiheit, wäre niemand verantwortlich.The subject es cannot be omitted in conditional inversion.
