In German academic writing, citing sources (Quellenangabe) follows specific patterns that differ from English conventions.
Direct attribution:
- Wie Müller (2023) argumentiert,... (As Müller argues,...)
- Laut Schmidt (2022) ist die Lage ernst. (According to Schmidt, the situation is serious.)
Indirect attribution with Konjunktiv I:
- Dem Autor zufolge seien die Ergebnisse vielversprechend. (According to the author, the results are promising.)
Key prepositions for attribution:
- laut + dative: laut der Studie
- zufolge (after noun, dative): dem Bericht zufolge
- nach + dative: nach Angaben des Ministeriums
Proper citation builds credibility and avoids plagiarism in academic German.

Laut Müller die Ergebnisse sind positivLaut Müller sind die Ergebnisse positivAfter laut + source, normal V2 word order applies: verb in second position.
Zufolge dem Bericht...Dem Bericht zufolge...Zufolge is a postposition: the dative noun comes before it.
Wie Müller argumentiert dass...Wie Müller argumentiert,...After wie + author + verb, use a comma, not dass.
Nach die Angaben des AutorsNach den Angaben des AutorsNach takes the dative: die Angaben becomes den Angaben.
Müller betont: die Forschung steht am AnfangMüller betont, die Forschung stehe am AnfangUse Konjunktiv I (stehe) for indirect speech after betont, or proper quote marks for direct speech.
