When discussing books in German, the Plusquamperfekt (past perfect) is essential for narrating events that happened before other past events.

Plusquamperfekt formation: hatte/war + Partizip II

Nachdem er das Buch gelesen hatte, empfahl er es mir. (After he had read the book, he recommended it to me.)
Bevor die Autorin berühmt geworden war, hatte sie jahrelang gekämpft. (Before the author had become famous, she had struggled for years.)

Key temporal conjunctions with Plusquamperfekt:

nachdem (after): Nachdem ich das Kapitel beendet hatte, verstand ich die Metapher. (After I had finished the chapter, I understood the metaphor.)
bevor (before): Bevor er den Protagonist traf, hatte er allein gelebt. (Before he met the protagonist, he had lived alone.)

Discussing books:

Der Roman handelt von... (The novel is about...)
Die Geschichte spielt im 19. Jahrhundert. (The story is set in the 19th century.)
Der Autor greift das Thema... auf. (The author takes up the theme of...)
