Writing a Short Story in French
Narrative Tenses
Short stories in French require mastering the interplay between the imparfait and passé composé (or passé simple in literary style).
Tense usage:
Il pleuvait quand Marie est entrée dans le café. — It was raining when Marie entered the café.
Elle portait un manteau rouge et semblait pressée. — She was wearing a red coat and seemed in a hurry.
Soudain, elle a aperçu quelqu'un qu'elle connaissait. — Suddenly, she spotted someone she knew.
Setting the Scene (Imparfait)
The imparfait creates atmosphere and background:
- Description — Le ciel était gris. Les rues étaient désertes.
- Habit — Chaque matin, il prenait le même chemin.
- State of mind — Elle se sentait seule et perdue.
- Simultaneous actions — Pendant qu'il lisait, elle rêvait.
Advancing the Plot (Passé composé/simple)
Completed actions move the story forward:
Il a ouvert la porte et a découvert la vérité. — He opened the door and discovered the truth.
Elle s'est retournée, a souri, puis est partie. — She turned around, smiled, then left.
Direct Speech in Narratives
Use proper punctuation and reporting verbs:
« Je ne reviendrai jamais », a-t-elle murmuré. — "I will never come back," she murmured.
« Attends ! » s'est-il écrié. — "Wait!" he cried out.
Descriptive Techniques
- Comparison: Ses yeux brillaient comme des étoiles.
- Metaphor: La ville était un labyrinthe de souvenirs.
- Personification: Le vent chuchotait entre les arbres.
