Summarizing in Dutch requires converting direct statements into indirect speech while preserving meaning. At C1 level, you must paraphrase skillfully rather than copy phrases directly.
Indirect speech (indirecte rede):
- Direct: De minister zei: "We moeten bezuinigen."
- Indirect: De minister zei dat er bezuinigd moest worden.
Key transformations: Pronouns shift (ik becomes hij/zij), tense may shift (present to past), and demonstratives change (dit becomes dat, hier becomes daar). Modal verbs in indirect speech often shift: zullen becomes zouden.
Paraphrasing techniques:
- Use synonyms: het probleem can become de kwestie or het vraagstuk
- Change sentence structure: active to passive or vice versa
- Use reporting verbs: beweren (to claim), betogen (to argue), suggereren (to suggest), benadrukken (to emphasize)
A good summary in Dutch uses varied reporting verbs, avoids direct quotation, and captures the author's argument without personal commentary.
