Comparing Cultures with "Terwijl" and Contrast Words
Terwijl (while/whereas) is a key conjunction for expressing cultural contrasts. It introduces a subclause with SOV word order.
Terwijl for Contrast
- In Nederland geef je een hand, terwijl je in Japan buigt.
- Nederlanders zijn heel direct, terwijl Belgen diplomatieker zijn.
Word Order After Terwijl
Terwijl introduces a subclause → verb goes to the end:
- ...terwijl je in andere landen anders doet. (SOV)
Other Contrast Words

Comparing with Vergelijken
- A vergelijken met B: Je kunt Nederland vergelijken met België.

Tip: Terwijl can mean both "while" (simultaneous) and "whereas" (contrast). Context determines the meaning.
