"Gaan + Infinitive" for Plans
In Dutch, gaan + infinitive is the most natural way to express future plans and intentions — much more common than zullen in spoken Dutch.
Basic Structure
Subject + gaan + (extras) + infinitive
- Ik ga morgen mijn koffer inpakken.
- We gaan een tussenstop maken in Antwerpen.
- Zij gaat de accommodatie boeken.
Gaan vs. Zullen
- We gaan naar België rijden. → Het zal mooi weer zijn.
- Ik ga vanavond inpakken. → Ik zal je helpen.
Combining with Als (Conditional)
When combining plans with conditions:
- Als het mooi weer is, gaan we naar het strand.
- Als er file staat, gaan we de provinciale weg nemen.
Separable Verbs with Gaan
Separable verbs stay together as the infinitive at the end:
- Ik ga mijn koffer inpakken. (not: Ik ga in mijn koffer pakken.)
- We gaan morgen vroeg vertrekken.
Tip: In daily Dutch, gaan for future plans is far more natural than zullen. Use it to sound more native!
