Zullen for Predictions, Zouden for Uncertainty
Zullen — Future Predictions
Zullen + infinitive expresses future predictions and certainty:
- ik → zal
- jij/u → zal/zult
- hij/zij → zal
- wij/jullie/zij → zullen
Prediction examples:
- AI zal in de toekomst steeds belangrijker worden. (AI will become increasingly important in the future.)
- Experts voorspellen dat robots veel banen zullen vervangen. (Experts predict that robots will replace many jobs.)
Zouden — Uncertainty and Speculation
Zouden expresses uncertainty, speculation, or what might happen:
- Het zou kunnen dat AI gevaarlijk wordt. (It could be that AI becomes dangerous.)
- Dat zou een groot probleem kunnen zijn. (That could be a big problem.)
- AI zou in de toekomst betrouwbaarder kunnen worden. (AI could become more reliable in the future.)
Key Difference
- Zullen = strong prediction (will): Robots zullen ons helpen.
- Zouden = uncertain/hypothetical (could/might): Robots zouden ons kunnen helpen.
Useful Hedging Phrases
- Het is mogelijk dat... (It is possible that...)
- Het zou kunnen dat... (It could be that...)
- Misschien zal... (Perhaps... will...)
- Het is nog onzeker of... (It is still uncertain whether...)
