Relative Clauses with Prepositions
When a relative clause involves a preposition, use waar + preposition:
- De app waar ik het meest op zit, is Instagram. (The app I spend the most time on is Instagram.)
- Het account waar ik mee ben ingelogd. (The account I am logged in with.)
- De serie waar iedereen het over heeft. (The show everyone is talking about.)
die/dat as Subject vs. Object
As subject (who/which does something):
- De volger die altijd commentaar geeft. (The follower who always comments.)
As object (whom/which someone does something to):
- De foto die ik gisteren heb gedeeld. (The photo I shared yesterday.)
- Het bericht dat hij heeft verstuurd. (The message he sent.)
Omitting the Relative Pronoun
In spoken Dutch, die/dat can sometimes be omitted when it is the object:
- De app (die) ik het meest gebruik... (The app I use the most...)
Word Order Reminder
In relative clauses, the conjugated verb goes to the end:
- De notificaties die ik elke dag krijg, zijn irritant. (The notifications that I get every day are annoying.)
