The Imperative and Sequential Discourse Markers

In DIY instructions, two key structures combine: the imperative (command form) and sequential markers (eerst, daarna, vervolgens, ten slotte).

The Dutch Imperative

The imperative is simply the verb stem:

• Boor een gat in de muur. (Drill a hole.)
• Schroef de plank vast. (Screw the board in.)
• Gebruik een verfroller. (Use a paint roller.)

For separable verbs, the prefix separates:

• Draai de schroef vast. (Tighten the screw.)
• Sla de spijker erin. (Hammer the nail in.)

Sequential Discourse Markers

• Eerst → First
• Dan / Daarna → Then / After that
• Vervolgens → Next / Subsequently
• Ten slotte → Finally
• Voordat → Before

Inversion After Markers

After discourse markers at the start, the verb comes second (inversion):

• Eerst boor je een gat. (not: Eerst je boort een gat.)
• Daarna schroef je de plank vast.

Tip: Use the polite imperative with *u* for formal instructions: *Boort u een gat* or *Zou u een gat willen boren?*
