Conditional Sentences with als

Navigating the Dutch healthcare system requires understanding conditional sentences with als (if).

Type 1 conditional (real/likely): als + present tense, main clause present/future:

Als je verzekerd bent, kun je naar de huisarts. — If you are insured, you can go to the GP.
Als je een verwijzing nodig hebt, belt je huisarts de specialist. — If you need a referral, your GP calls the specialist.

Notice in the als-clause, the verb goes to the end (SOV):

als je verzekerd bent (not: als je bent verzekerd)
