At the Dutch Pharmacy: er + Preposition

Dutch pharmacies (apotheken) are separate from drugstores (drogisterijen). You need a prescription (recept) from your huisarts for many medicines.

A key grammar point at B1 is er + preposition. The word er replaces a thing (not a person) when used with a preposition:

Bent u allergisch ervoor? → Bent u er allergisch voor? — Are you allergic to it?
Ik weet er niets over. — I know nothing about it.

The preposition separates from er and moves after the object or to the end. This is different from English where "for it" stays together.

Common pharmacy questions:

Zou u mij iets kunnen aanbevelen? — Could you recommend something to me?
Hoe vaak moet ik dit innemen? — How often should I take this?
Zijn er bijwerkingen? — Are there side effects?
Is het veilig om dit te combineren met...? — Is it safe to combine this with...?

Note the er zijn construction: Er zijn bijwerkingen (There are side effects). Here er is existential, meaning "there."
