Advantages/Disadvantages Structure & er + Locative
Discussing Pros and Cons
Dutch has clear structures for weighing advantages and disadvantages:
- Een voordeel is dat... (An advantage is that...)
- Een nadeel is dat... (A disadvantage is that...)
- Aan de ene kant... aan de andere kant... (On the one hand... on the other hand...)
- Enerzijds... anderzijds... (On the one hand... on the other hand... — more formal)
Examples:
- Een voordeel van thuiswerken is dat je geen reistijd hebt. (An advantage of working from home is that you have no commute.)
- Aan de andere kant mis je het contact met collega's. (On the other hand, you miss contact with colleagues.)
er + Locative Adverbs
The word er combines with prepositions to replace "there" + preposition:
- er...aan → to/at it
- er...mee → with it
- er...van → of/from it
- er...over → about it
Note: In main clauses, er goes near the verb and the preposition goes to the end:
- Ik denk er vaak over na. (I often think about it.)
