Adjectives with "zijn" (to be)
To describe someone, use zijn + adjective:
- Hij is groot → He is tall
- Zij is mooi → She is beautiful
- Het kind is klein → The child is small
Adjective before a noun
When an adjective comes before a noun, it usually gets an -e ending:
- een groote man (a tall man)
- een mooie vrouw (a beautiful woman)
- een klein kind (a small child — no -e with het-words + een!)
Rule: Add -e to the adjective, EXCEPT with het-words preceded by "een": een klein kind, een oud huis.
Describing hair and eyes
- Hij heeft blond haar → He has blond hair
- Zij heeft blauwe ogen → She has blue eyes
- Mijn broer heeft kort haar → My brother has short hair
Tip: "Haar" (hair) is a het-word in Dutch, so: het haar.

常见错误
Een grote kindEen groot kind"Kind" is a het-word. After "een" + het-word, the adjective gets NO -e ending.
Zij heeft lang haar blondZij heeft lang blond haarAdjectives come before the noun in Dutch: lang blond haar, not haar blond.
Hij is een grootHij is grootWhen using zijn + adjective (not before a noun), don't use "een".
Mijn broer heeft haar kortMijn broer heeft kort haar"Kort" comes before "haar" in Dutch word order.
Zij is mooi ogenZij heeft mooie ogenFor physical features you HAVE, use "heeft" not "is". And add -e: mooie.
