Punctuation Mastery
Spanish punctuation has specific rules that distinguish it from English:
- Inverted marks: Spanish is unique with its opening ¡! and ¿?, mandatory even in long sentences where the exclamation does not start at the beginning
- Semicolon vs colon: the punto y coma separates related but independent clauses; dos puntos introduce an explanation, enumeration, or direct speech
- Em dash vs hyphen: the raya (—) frames parenthetical clauses and introduces dialogue in novels; the guion (-) joins compound words
- Comma: never between subject and verb in Spanish (Mi hermano, trabaja is incorrect), unlike English in some cases
- Ellipsis: always three dots, never more, followed by a capital letter if a new sentence begins
- Quotation marks: Spanish prefers angular quotes (« »), then double (" "), then single (' ') in hierarchical order
- Apostrophe: virtually nonexistent in modern Spanish, unlike English
Выражения
