Humor and irony in Spanish

Spanish humor often relies on sarcasm, litotes, and euphemisms. Mastering these figures of speech enriches your expression.

Litotes says less to mean more:

No está mal. — It's not bad. (= It's quite good)

Euphemism softens reality:

Es de la tercera edad. — He's of the third age. (= He's old)

Sarcasm says the opposite of what you mean:

¡Qué puntual eres! (to someone late) — How punctual you are!

Humorous exaggeration:

Me lo has dicho un millón de veces. — You've told me a million times.

Intonation plays a crucial role: the same sentence can be sincere or sarcastic depending on the tone. In Spanish, dry humor (humor seco) is highly appreciated.
