The conditional 2 (imperfect subjunctive) for negotiating
To negotiate politely and propose hypothetical conditions, Spanish uses the imperfect subjunctive (often called conditional 2 in negotiations).
Structure: Si + imperfect subjunctive, conditional
Si ofreciéramos un descuento, ¿aceptaría?
Si redujeran el precio, firmaríamos hoy.
Forming the imperfect subjunctive
Base: 3rd person plural of the pretérito indefinido, then add endings:
- yo → -ra
- tú → -ras
- él/ella → -ra
- nosotros → -ramos
- vosotros → -rais
- ellos → -ran
Examples: ofrecer → ofrecieron → ofreciera / reducir → redujeron → redujera
Key negotiation expressions
- ¿Sería posible...? (Would it be possible...?)
- Estaríamos dispuestos a... (We would be willing to...)
- Podríamos llegar a un compromiso si... (We could reach a compromise if...)
Accepting or declining
- Me parece razonable. / Trato hecho.
- Lo siento, pero no podemos aceptar esas condiciones.
