Fue vs. Estuvo — Describing Past Experiences
Spanish has two ways to say "it was" in the past, and choosing correctly is important.
Fue (from ser) — For defining experiences
Use fue to classify or judge an event as a whole:
- La película fue genial. → The movie was great.
- La fiesta fue aburrida. → The party was boring.
- El viaje fue emocionante. → The trip was exciting.
Estuvo (from estar) — For states and conditions
Use estuvo to describe a temporary state or how something felt at a specific moment:
- El hotel estuvo tranquilo. → The hotel was quiet (at that time).
- La comida estuvo horrible. → The food was horrible (when I tried it).
- El restaurante estuvo ruidoso. → The restaurant was noisy (that night).
Era / Estaba — For background descriptions
When describing the setting or background (not evaluating), use the imperfect:
- Era un día bonito. → It was a nice day (setting the scene).
- Estaba muy cansado. → I was very tired (background state).
Tip: Think of fue/estuvo as your verdict, and era/estaba as painting the picture.

La fiesta fue muy tranquila.La fiesta estuvo muy tranquila.When describing a temporary state or atmosphere at a specific moment, estuvo (estar) is more appropriate.
El hotel era ruidoso anoche.El hotel estuvo ruidoso anoche.With a specific time reference like anoche, use the preterite estuvo, not the imperfect era.
¿Cómo estuvo tu viaje?¿Cómo fue tu viaje?When asking for an overall evaluation of an experience, use fue (ser).
Fue un día muy bonito, y yo fue feliz.Fue un día muy bonito, y yo fui feliz.Fue is the third person (él/ella) form. For yo, use fui.
