Phone calls in Spanish
Making and receiving phone calls in Spanish follows specific formulas. Learning these set phrases will help you sound natural even at the A1 level.
Answering the phone
In Spain, people usually answer with:
- ¿Diga? / ¿Dígame? — Hello? (formal)
- ¿Sí? — Yes? (informal)
In Latin America, you may hear:
- ¿Bueno? (Mexico)
- ¿Aló? (many countries)
Asking for someone
- ¿Está María? — Is María there?
- ¿Podría hablar con el señor López? — Could I speak with Mr. López?
- Soy Ana. — This is Ana. (to identify yourself)
The conditional ¿Podría...?
Podría (could) is used for polite requests on the phone:
- ¿Podría dejar un mensaje? — Could I leave a message?
- ¿Podría repetir, por favor? — Could you repeat that, please?
- ¿Podría llamar más tarde? — Could you call later?
Useful phone phrases
- Un momento, por favor. — One moment, please.
- No cuelgue. — Don't hang up.
- La línea está ocupada. — The line is busy.
- Le paso con... — I'll put you through to...
- Ha salido. — He/She has gone out.
Ejemplo: "¿Diga? — Hola, ¿está Pedro? — Un momento, por favor. — Gracias." — "Hello? — Hi, is Pedro there? — One moment, please. — Thank you."
