Narrating Travel Experiences
Pretérito Perfeito vs. Imperfeito in Stories
When telling travel stories, you alternate between two past tenses:
Pretérito Perfeito — completed actions (what happened):
- Visitámos o monumento. — We visited the monument.
- Tirei muitas fotografias. — I took many photos.
Pretérito Imperfeito — descriptions and background (what it was like):
- O tempo estava ótimo. — The weather was great.
- A paisagem era linda. — The scenery was beautiful.
Combining Both Tenses
- Quando chegámos (P), o sol estava a pôr-se (I). — When we arrived, the sun was setting.
- Estávamos (I) no restaurante quando começou (P) a chover. — We were at the restaurant when it started to rain.
Superlatives for Emphasis
O/A mais + adjective — the most:
- Foi a viagem mais bonita. — It was the most beautiful trip.
O/A melhor / pior — the best / worst:
- Foi o melhor dia da viagem. — It was the best day of the trip.

A paisagem era muito bonita. Tirava muitas fotos.A paisagem era muito bonita. Tirei muitas fotos.Descriptions use imperfeito (era), but completed actions use perfeito (tirei)
Foi a viagem mais melhor.Foi a melhor viagem.Melhor already means better/best — don't add mais before it
Gostava voltar lá.Gostava de voltar lá.Gostar always requires the preposition de before an infinitive
Quando chegámos, o sol pôs-se.Quando chegámos, o sol estava a pôr-se.The ongoing background action (sun setting) needs imperfeito, not perfeito
Tirámos muitas fotografia.Tirámos muitas fotografias.After muitas (many), the noun must be plural: fotografias
